Across the world, researchers, engineers, filmmakers, designers, founders and independent creators are spending their days, and often their nights, learning to work with a new kind of intelligence. They are doing more than using AI tools. They are orchestrating models, agents, software, judgment and human creativity to produce work that was previously impossible for an individual or small team.
Yet the institutions surrounding this new profession have not kept pace. OIAIL was created to study what happens next. We research the systems, standards, governance, human agency and responsibilities emerging as artificial intelligence becomes capable not only of generating content, but of acting.
And through the Orchestrator Awards, we recognize the people and work defining this new era.
For decades, institutions celebrated the people who mastered cameras, code, laboratories, markets and machines. A new generation is learning to master intelligence itself. They deserve institutions of their own.

Existing institutions were built to evaluate work made by people using tools. They have no settled vocabulary for work made by people directing AI systems. What cannot be named cannot be credited or assessed.
There is no agreed definition of what human direction of an AI system consists of: which decisions count, how they are recorded, and how they can be verified.
A field cannot be judged before it has been studied. Recognition and scholarship must exist first: a record of the work, criteria for assessing it, and research to test those criteria.
